A tub or a walk-in shower

If you can't decide, we'd go walk-in shower, 100%. Long Island bathrooms are tiny to begin with: the standard one here is five by seven or five by eight. In a room that size, a walk-in shower behind a clear glass door is what makes it look bigger.

One Massapequa bathroom went that way. Tub and white tile out; glass shower, tiled niche and hexagon floor in. We did the same in Jericho, Long Beach, Wantagh, Hicksville and East Meadow, and those five are in our post on tub-to-shower conversions.

A tub can stay, too. The bathrooms we redid in Plainview, Dix Hills and Freeport all have one, behind a glass door.

How long it takes

A partial is when we redo just the shower, the wet area. In a standard five by seven or five by eight bathroom that takes about 4 to 7 days. A full gut of the same room usually takes 7 to 12. A bigger bathroom takes longer.

What a bathroom remodel costs on Long Island

For that same standard bathroom, a partial runs about $5,000 to $15,000 and a full gut about $13,000 to $35,000. A much bigger bathroom can go as high as about $100,000. These are typical ranges, not quotes.

Your price follows what you pick and the size of the room. A bench, a custom niche or a linear drain adds to it, and tile alone comes in a wide range of prices.

Glass, tile and vanities

Frosted doors came off the showers in Port Washington and Medford. Both have clear glass now, with marble-look tile behind it. In East Meadow a pedestal sink came out and a white vanity went up on the wall, and Wantagh traded a long built-in for an espresso double vanity.

Our own crew does the job and lays the tile. Licensed contractors do the plumbing and the electric.

How a job runs

It starts with a phone call, so we can both tell whether it's a good fit. The estimate over the phone costs nothing, and photos or a video of your bathroom are enough for us to price it.

Then bring your pics, videos and wishlist to the showroom. Your price comes from how much work the bathroom needs and what you pick out there. Once you've said yes, or paid a good-faith deposit, we usually do 3D drawings.

After the deposit we hold whatever is in our warehouse for you and order the rest. When it has all arrived, we call you to book the dates.
