Water first
We inspect the basement for signs of water coming in, moisture, mold, cracks and foundation issues, and we check the walls and floors for excess moisture before we start construction. Any water or moisture problem has to be properly taken care of before the basement gets finished.
If there's damp, we basically have to demo out wherever the moisture is. Then it needs proper time to dry, and everything has to air out before we go back in there and do anything.
Starting from an unfinished basement
One of ours was in Freeport. When we got there it was a bare floor and block walls, with a support column standing in the room. We boxed the column in, put down vinyl plank and finished the utility area as well.
Our crew does all of it, and we have our own licensed plumber and electrician in house. We do egress windows too.
When only the floor needs replacing
In Garden City the basement was already finished. All it needed was the floor, so the beige carpet came out and we put down a warm wood-look vinyl plank around the paneled posts. You pick the floor at our Levittown showroom, and we lay it ourselves.
How long it takes
Once work begins, a basement typically takes 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the scope of work, the existing conditions and any custom features.
What a basement remodel costs on Long Island
It all depends on size. There's no such thing as a standard basement; every one is a different size. But say yours is about 500 square feet. Floors only, in carpet, vinyl or laminate, could run from about $1,500 to $5,000. Tile could run even higher.
A full gut basement remodel could run anywhere from about $20,000 to $60,000, depending on existing conditions, layout, materials and finishes. That includes framing, insulation, sheetrock, electrical, flooring, ceilings, trim and painting. Bathrooms, wet bars, waterproofing, structural changes and custom features would be additional. These are typical ranges, not quotes.
Many times the owner pulls their own permits. Sometimes they ask us to help them pull the permits, so it could be either. Our post on finishing a basement has what Nassau and Suffolk say about them.
“…our third bath remodel with Class Remodeling, this time in our basement… Robert, our salesman was great…”
More basements are in our basement before and after photos. Whole houses are under full-home remodeling, and kitchens and bathrooms under kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling.
How a job runs
It starts with a phone call, so we can both tell whether it's a good fit. The estimate over the phone costs nothing, and photos or a video of your basement are enough for us to price it.
Then bring your pics, videos and wishlist to the showroom. Your price comes from how much work the basement needs and what you pick out there. Once you've said yes, or paid a good-faith deposit, we usually do 3D drawings.
After the deposit we hold whatever is in our warehouse for you and order the rest. When it has all arrived, we call you to book the dates.
